about

Vinyl available from Le Pop Club Records - lepopclub.com/produit/nick-wheeldon-waiting-for-the-piano-to-fall/

The man with multiple groups seems perpetually in search of imbalance and surprise. Like a transfixed lover on a first date, Nick Wheeldon never tires and adds new formations with an ease that borders on the supernatural. In addition, the number of advancing trains is disconcerting to say the least. he's already finished recording and mixing his fourth solo album, composed his fifth, working on the second album of The Necessary Separations and recording the fourth LP of his first group founded in France, Os Noctàmbulos. The advantage of getting lost in Nick Wheeldon's discography is multiple.

After a very notable first solo album in 2021, 'Communication Problems', and a 2nd 'Gift' (Album of the Month *****, Rock & Folk) in 2022 Nick Wheeldon, the Parisian Englishman from Sheffield, returns with his third LP, 'Waiting For The Piano To Fall'.

Over the past 11 years, Nick Wheeldon has recorded nearly 20 records with countless bands - Nick Wheeldon's Demon Hosts, The Jesus Loves Heroin Band, Os Noctàmbulos, The Necessary Separations, 39th & the Nortons, Nick & Alizon, Sex Sux , Nick Drunken Broken Arms & His False Ninja Dylan Cobb, Dômo Kômô - each of them offering him a new opportunity to refine his sound inspired by Gene Clark and Alex Chilton - a sound at once majestic and fragile, delicate and flayed. The advantage of getting lost in his discography is endless.

His first solo album was recorded in his friends' rooms and his 2nd LP, 'Gift', recorded in one day with the idea of a collective painting where the shape and format of the song would never be the same twice. Waiting For The Piano To Fall, like Gift, was recorded entirely live on a Tascam 388, 8-track tape, during a week-long session in the countryside of Normandy, at Télémaque studio in Caen, in February 2021. The band, The Living Paintings, had never played together before this album and had no rehearsals until arriving at the studio. They arrived one by one at Télémaque, where they spent two days setting up the studio then five days learning, arranging and recording the songs together. In April 2021, 'Stamping On The Daffodils' and 'Thief' were recorded live on Tascam 4-track cassette at Fausse Boutique studio in Quimper, where the LP was mixed on 4 track by producer Paul Trigoulet.

Waiting For The Piano To Fall is the third LP of the trilogy for which Wheeldon tried to capture a moment, an acoustic photograph, a 'living painting'. The album talks about the fragility of love, but not only. There are darker political themes which contaminate the record. On 'They're Not Selling Flowers Around Here, Anymore' - Gentrification, 'Black Madonna' - The African American protests in Detroit in '67 and the need to assert their rights, true sadly even today, 'Stamping On The Dafodills' - the welfare state and the end of the working class, 'Routine Prisoner' - illegal wars, and 'Waiting For The Piano To Fall' - climate change and the inevitable end of the world.

The Living Paintings: Nico Brusq (Greg Ashley) - Drums, Stéphane Jach (Jach Ernest) - Violin, Luc Martin (Bootchy Temple) - Bass, Sam Roux (Handy Curse) - Piano and Keyboards and Paul Trigoulet (Don Idiot) - Guitar Lead, give astonishing color, shape, confidence and experience to his hypersensitive anti-folk songs that make us feel like we're entering Wheeldon's inner world. The arrangements, more elaborate than on past albums, are centered around a subtle American country soul influenced groove which allows even the softest ballads to swing.

The group is preparing a tour in February 2024 to celebrate this new album.
In the same way that he likes to surround himself with musicians from all over France, Wheeldon is used to entrusting his records to numerous independent European labels. For the fourth time, Le Pop Club Records is responsible for introducing his new music to the world, following the release of Dômo Kômo's "Bugs" LP in 2020 and his solo LP's "Communication Problems" and "Gift" in 2021 and 2022. It is with great pleasure that we collaborate once again with a musician who, in our humble opinion, continues to prove that he is one of the most important French musicians of our time, English though he may be.
